Okay... (sigh) Its Time. ARZA! SHADOW! Hey, what's up? Something going on? TIME TO RIP INTO THIS!! A few weeks ago, E3 2021 was confirmed to be an all digital event and I was excited. That announcement is getting its own post later, but overall it got me thinking about past E3's again. Specifically, the one E3 from Nintendo that I personally dislike the most. Yeah, were finally going to talk about the E3 "Presentation" From Nintendo that I honestly didn't like. Not because of bad announcements, but of the lack of presentation. So you think this is the worst E3 presentation? That's a bold statement. Only the worst that Nintendo has done in terms of their digital events. Obviously they and other companies have done way worse. However, in terms of the retrospective we've been covering for a while- A VERY long while, to be frank. This is the worst of the lot, and I am so glad we finally get to talk about this conference. So lets not waste any time. This is Nintendo's E3 2016 "Presentation". Games Shown The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Pokémon Sun & Moon Paper Mario Color Splash Mario Party Star Tour Monster Hunter Generations Rhythm Heaven Megamix BoxBoxBoy! Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Ever Oasis Dragon Quest VII Pokémon Go Yo-kai Watch 2 To be fair, a little preface. In 2016, the Wii U was pretty much known as a total failure at that point. Even the 3DS, which was still a great seller, wasn't pushing the same numbers it usually did. People were really waiting to see the next new system from Nintendo, codenamed NX at the time. A little earlier in the year, Nintendo made a... lets call it a peculiar announcement. Nintendo announced that for 2016 they would not have a video presentation at that year’s E3 event. Rather they would be livestreaming Zelda BOTW and a few other games like Monster Hunter, Paper Mario Color Splash, and Pokemon Sun and Moon through Nintendo Treehouse. People weren't really happy with announcement, including me. I wanted a fun Nintendo Direct showcase and we got nothing like that. Ok, that's a bummer, but its not like they didn't show anything cool. Right? Yeah, I guess should talk about the pros, because I certainly can't act like there weren't any good ones. Pros (+)The treehouse live segments were really good. They were informative, the developers and treehouse crew were funny and really cool to see, and I liked seeing them demonstrate the games. Not only because the games looked fun, but I enjoyed seeing their reactions and banter between each other, it was really cool. Next up is the games and honestly, despite some titles not necessarily being super AAA titles, the lineup of games they had that year were really decent. New footage of Paper Mario Color Splash, a new Mario Party, a look at Sun & Moon. Not to mention there were still some cool surprises like Rhythm Heaven Megamix shadow dropping during E3. And of course, the in-depth look at the future GOTY of 2017 and most well-reviewed game of all time also helped (Breath of the Wild). However, that would cause a minor problem in future E3’s, although I’ll get to when we reach 2018. Yeah, I really enjoyed the announcements, and the Treehouse live segments were really well done. ... That's all you have to say about the pros isn't it? Yep. CONS (-)OH BOY! Smaller titles or not, Nintendo had no reason not to show some kind, ANY KIND, of video presentation talking about the games they were going to show. That’s not me saying the Treehouse segments were bad, far from it, but for Nintendo to just drop information all willy-nilly with almost no build-up or sense of grandeur, it really hurt their E3 presence in my opinion. Remember, BOTW was gonna be the only game on the SHOW FLOOR, not the only game period. If they did a Nintendo Direct Micro, made a trailer compilation video, or even if they just showed a 5 – 10 min sizzle reel just showing trailers for the games they were showing I think that would’ve satiated fans and honestly would have made for a decent E3 presentation with the games they had, but they didn’t do that. Admittedly, I don't know for sure if these games would've been strong enough to show in a presentation. Forgive the frankness, but most definitely not. However, the lack of a presentation made the livestream feel a bit empty, and I wish there were a few more surprise announcements that year. So is this your least favorite because they didn't show anything about the NX? No, I'm never going to say a presentation was bad because they didn't show what I wanted or show something that "everyone wanted to see". So... It sucked because they didn't have a fancy video? Obviously not, No. So, what is the issue? Yeah, What? This isn't me saying its impossible to have an E3 presence and no presentation video. Its totally possible, some companies do it all the time, I just don't think that this press event was handled right. This didn't feel like 2013 when Nintendo wanted to test the idea of using Directs as Press Events, it felt like Nintendo didn't have enough to show that would make a decent presentation so they just showed off games they already announced and just livestreamed them. I can understand that decision in terms of showcasing games on the show floor, and once again the treehouse stream was very well-done, but cutting out the presentation was a bad move, because in my opinion Nintendo didn't properly fill the void that was left. They probably wouldn't have "won E3" that year, but it would've been nice to see the games they had showcased in a fun little presentation or video. Especially since the games they showed were really decent, but that didn't happen. Despite having something to show that year, Nintendo showed NOTHING, and they didn’t need to.
